MEP Lagos announces his hunger strike to the European Parliament

Dear Colleagues,

I regret to inform you about my decision to go on a hunger strike. Unfortunately, this decision is the only way forward for me.

I have been in prison since April 2021 under a decision that even today, 16 months after its issuance, has not been written. Since 2013 I have spent 2.5 years in prison and I still do not have access to the verdict!

I am in prison pursuant to a first instance decision, while the Court of Appeal has not yet been appointed, and I risk having served my sentence before the judgment of the Court of Appeal decision is issued. As a result, I am deprived of the human right of appeal which is enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights.

I am in prison, being a hostage of a regime that deprives me of the right to be transferred to the Athens EPLO in order to give a speech during the Plenary Session of the European Parliament.

I am in this miserable situation, because YOU and the JURI Committee have never taken into account all the evidence I have submitted (proving that I am a victim of political persecution) and preferred to throw me as a prey to the corrupt Greek “Justice” instead.

I am in this impasse because the European Parliament which pretends to care about human rights, in my case, chose to turn a blind eye to the blatant injustice and suffering I have been suffering since 2013, proving its hypocrisy.

As a result, I have no choice but to go on a hunger strike demanding my sentence to be suspended until the Court of Appeal judgment. I was born free, I lived free and I decided in my last step, to die free, if necessary, for my ideas and in order to prove my innocence.

Yours faithfully,

Ioannis LAGOS
